Professional Crypto Trading in Sweden: Capital, Hobby or Business?

Sweden has no automatic trade-count threshold that turns private crypto investing into a business. Ordinary own-account crypto trading normally remains capital income; business treatment requires the actual activity and inventory facts to satisfy Swedish business criteria.

When Swedish crypto trading is capital, hobby or business in 2026: no trade-count threshold, inventory rules, mining, payments, NE reporting and records.

Reviewed October 9, 2026. This guide addresses individuals. A limited company is a separate taxpayer with accounting and corporate-income rules and should not use the private K4 result as its corporate return.

There is no 30-trade or 50-trade business threshold

Swedish guidance does not turn an investor into a business after a fixed number of trades, a certain turnover or the use of bots. Calling yourself a professional trader, spending many hours or relying on trading for living expenses is also not a standalone legal test.

An automated report should therefore not move K4 disposals into an NE business worksheet just because transaction volume is high. Classification comes before calculation and must be supported by the actual activity.

Ordinary own-account trading remains capital income

Bitcoin and similar crypto held privately are normally capital investment assets. Sales, swaps and spending are reported in K4 section D. Gains are fully taxable at 30%; 70% of losses is deductible. Sweden's average-cost method applies across the same fungible asset.

The official Skatteverket crypto guidance is expressly aimed mainly at private individuals and only diverts genuine business or outward-facing exchange activity to the business rules. The complete Sweden guide explains K4.

General criteria for näringsverksamhet

Swedish business income requires an independent, lasting activity conducted with a profit motive under the general boundary rules. These criteria are assessed together. Registration for F-tax or a business name is evidence of organisation but does not automatically change the character of an investment asset.

Skatteverket's legal guidance on the boundary of business income provides the general framework.

When can crypto be business inventory?

Skatteverket says later value changes in crypto received by a business are normally capital income unless crypto is inventory in that business. It gives outward-facing exchange activity as an example where inventory treatment can apply if the business criteria are satisfied.

This is narrower than “I trade my own account professionally.” A business that offers exchange services to customers, continuously buys and sells for that outward activity and holds crypto for turnover has stronger inventory facts. A private person speculating with personal capital usually does not.

Business inventory requires bookkeeping, opening and closing balances, valuation under the applicable inventory rules, revenue and expenses. A broker's realised P&L alone is not an income statement.

Crypto received for ordinary business sales

When a web shop or consultant receives crypto for goods or services, the SEK value is business revenue and VAT is handled under the underlying supply. According to Skatteverket's example, if the crypto is not inventory of that business it is treated as withdrawn into the private sphere on receipt. A later sale then produces a K4 capital gain or loss using the previously recorded SEK value as cost.

This separation prevents the original sales revenue from being taxed twice. It also means an ordinary business accepting BTC does not automatically become a crypto-trading business.

Mining: hobby/service is the normal private starting point

Private mining income is normally taxed as service income from a hobby and can use the T2 schedule. Only exceptionally, when the general business criteria are genuinely met, is it business income. Value mined tokens in SEK when received and use that taxed value as their acquisition cost for a later K4 disposal.

Staking rewards are not automatically mining or business revenue. Ethereum 2.0 rewards are treated as capital return under Skatteverket's published position. Lending and pools depend on ownership and claim rights. See the Sweden DeFi guide.

Futures, perpetuals and funding

A crypto derivative is not the underlying spot token. Contract, issuer, marketplace and settlement decide whether it is a security, claim, option, CFD or another asset and which return field applies. A system must not move every exchange event labelled futures into crypto inventory or K4 section D.

Funding and fees may already be embedded in the broker's realised P&L or supplied separately. Reconcile them to avoid duplication. Open positions and snapshots are informational; taxable closed results need the actual contract classification.

Business accounting and the NE annex

A confirmed sole proprietorship with real crypto inventory begins with bookkeeping and annual accounts. The NE annex reflects accounting profit and tax adjustments; it is not populated from gross exchange proceeds alone.

Customer revenueBusiness turnover and VAT reconciliation
Exchange and wallet ledgerInventory movement and custody evidence
Private contributions/withdrawalsSeparate owner and business assets

A tax engine can supply an inventory and transaction reconciliation but cannot invent missing revenue, VAT, depreciation or owner transactions.

Three classification examples

High-frequency investor: Sara trades her own BTC and ETH daily on multiple exchanges. She has no customers or outward exchange service. High frequency alone does not displace the private capital starting point; she uses K4 and average cost.

Consultant paid in BTC: Johan invoices SEK 20,000 plus VAT and receives BTC. The invoice value is business revenue. If BTC is not inventory in his consultancy, later appreciation is normally private capital gain.

Customer-facing exchange: An organised activity continuously exchanges customer fiat and crypto for fees and holds coins for this outward service. If the business criteria are met, the crypto can be inventory and the result belongs in business accounting.

Complete the consultant example without counting revenue twice

Assume Johan’s ordinary consultancy invoice is SEK 20,000 plus SEK 5,000 applicable VAT and he receives 0.05 BTC worth SEK 25,000. The accounts record SEK 20,000 revenue and SEK 5,000 VAT, not SEK 25,000 profit. Under Skatteverket’s published non-inventory business-payment example, the BTC is withdrawn into the private sphere with SEK 25,000 acquisition cost. If Johan has no other BTC and later sells it for SEK 27,000 net of selling fees, the private K4 gain is SEK 2,000; isolated capital tax is SEK 600.

The original business income and its tax adjustments remain in the business return. Do not re-enter the full SEK 27,000 as consulting turnover or deduct VAT again from the private BTC basis. If Johan already owned BTC, the SEK 25,000 acquisition value instead joins his global BTC average-cost pool; the sold units cannot simply be labelled “the invoice lot.” Save the invoice, receipt valuation, own-withdrawal record and later execution together. A genuine exchange-inventory business requires a different accounting analysis.

Evidence checklist

Loss treatment differs between capital and business income, so classification should not be chosen after seeing which answer produces less tax. Review the Sweden loss guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does 100 crypto trades make me a Swedish business?

No. Sweden has no fixed trade threshold; ordinary own-account investing normally remains capital income.

Does accepting Bitcoin make my shop a crypto business?

No. The sale is business revenue, but later BTC value change is normally capital unless BTC is genuine business inventory.

Is private mining always business income?

No. Skatteverket says private mining is normally service/hobby income and only exceptionally business income.

Can a broker P&L directly populate the NE annex?

No. A business return begins with complete bookkeeping, inventory and tax adjustments.
