Crypto Tax in Denmark 2026: Speculation, FIFO and Tax Return Boxes

Published March 22, 2026 ·Updated October 9, 2026 · CoinTaxReporting · 8 min read

Denmark does not apply one flat crypto rate or a simple net capital-gain model. Private crypto acquired with a profit motive is generally treated as speculation: gains can enter personal income while losses receive a different deduction value. Transactions are calculated separately, FIFO spans exchanges and wallets, and certain stablecoins or derivatives can instead be financial contracts. This guide follows current Skattestyrelsen instructions.

Denmark's core rule: private speculation

Skattestyrelsen says private crypto buying and selling is generally considered speculative when the asset was acquired with the intention of making a gain on resale. The conclusion is based on all facts at acquisition, including the nature and uses of the asset, its suitability for price speculation, ability to resell at a gain, ownership, and the buyer's purpose.

A portfolio label such as "investment" or "private" does not decide the result. Conversely, transaction count alone is not the complete statutory test. Where a token or arrangement is unusual, Skattestyrelsen recommends requesting a binding ruling rather than extending ordinary Bitcoin treatment by analogy.

Keep the two sides separate: For ordinary speculative crypto, Skattestyrelsen requires gains and losses to be calculated separately, generally reported in different boxes, and gives them different tax values.

Why a DKK 10,000 gain and loss do not cancel

Official guidance says speculative crypto gains enter personal income, without the 8% labour-market contribution, and produces an individual result depending on income, municipality and the income-year brackets. A deductible loss has a tax value of approximately 26%. These are not two fixed crypto rates; they describe possible effects under the personal tax system.

For this reason, a report showing only "net realized P&L" is not sufficient for Danish private spot crypto. It must retain positive and negative disposals separately.

Sales, swaps and payments are disposals

A disposal is not limited to cashing out into Danish kroner. It includes:

In a crypto-to-crypto exchange, the surrendered token is sold at its DKK market value and the received token obtains a documented acquisition value. The new holding then enters its own inventory chain.

A transfer between the taxpayer's own wallets is not a sale merely because the location changes. Preserve address, transaction hash, quantity, original date, cost, and fees. Otherwise a receiving wallet can incorrectly appear to have zero cost.

FIFO covers the same asset across all wallets

Skattestyrelsen applies FIFO: the first units acquired are treated as the first units disposed. Its official instructions expressly say the same cryptoasset is one combined holding regardless of the exchange or wallet used for the sale.

Example: a taxpayer buys 1 ETH for DKK 12,000 on Exchange A and later 1 ETH for DKK 18,000 in Wallet B. A sale of 0.5 ETH from Wallet B uses DKK 6,000 of cost from the first acquisition under FIFO, not DKK 9,000 from the wallet where the sale happened.

FIFO runs separately by asset. ETH does not consume BTC basis. Wrapped, staked, receipt, bridged, or redenominated tokens first need identity and rights analysis; similar tickers do not prove they are the same Danish inventory.

This differs from Germany's wallet-level method and Sweden's average cost. See the FIFO calculation guide for partial fills and transfers.

Complete the two-purchase FIFO example

In the DKK 12,000/18,000 purchase example, sell the first 0.5 ETH for DKK 10,000 gross with a DKK 100 cash selling fee. Net proceeds of DKK 9,900 less DKK 6,000 FIFO cost create DKK 3,900 gain. A later 1 ETH sale for DKK 15,000, with no further fee, crosses the acquisition boundary: the old 0.5 ETH has DKK 7,500 proceeds and DKK 6,000 cost, producing DKK 1,500 gain; the next 0.5 ETH has DKK 7,500 proceeds and DKK 9,000 cost, producing DKK 1,500 loss. Keep those components separate.

Annual spot totals are DKK 5,400 gains and DKK 1,500 losses, with 0.5 ETH and DKK 9,000 cost remaining. The separate purchases prevent applying the narrow single-package netting exception. A calculation that reports only the second sale’s zero net result hides a profitable lot and a losing lot that can have different tax effects.

A missing import is first a reconstruction problem. If a deposit genuinely cannot be documented after that work, SKAT’s official FAQ generally requires a DKK 0 acquisition price at the deposit date. Proved internal transfers keep their original cost. Record which situation applies instead of treating every missing API field as a zero-cost purchase or leaving the final filing indefinitely unresolved.

Boxes 20 and 58 and the narrow netting exception

After calculating each disposal, enter total gains in box 20 and total documented losses in box 58 of the annual assessment. The normal annual-assessment amendment deadline is May 1, but SKAT extended the deadline for income year 2025 to May 20, 2026. The separate oplysningsskema deadline was July 1, 2026. Check the applicable income year and your filing route rather than carrying these dates into a later year. Previously unreported years must be corrected in the corresponding annual assessment rather than included in the current year.

Skattestyrelsen describes a narrow exception where netting can apply within a completely defined sequence for one cryptoasset: no prior holding, one simultaneous purchase, partial sales in the same income year, no intervening new purchases, and both profitable and loss-making sales in that sequence. It is not a general portfolio-netting rule and does not combine different assets or a multi-year mixed holding.

Direct purchase and sale costs can be deductible when tied to the specific trade. Internal-wallet transfer costs and the price of a tax calculation report are not automatically direct transaction deductions under the official guidance.

Stablecoins, futures and financial contracts

The name "stablecoin" does not determine Danish tax treatment. Skattestyrelsen says financial contracts with crypto as the underlying asset produce capital income. If a contract is entered into and settled in the same income year, the result belongs to that year. If it spans year-end, the mark-to-market principle generally applies.

Current instructions place financial-contract gains in box 346. Loss utilization is restricted to taxable net gains under the financial-contract rules; unused carryforward losses are identified in box 85. These amounts must not be mixed with speculative spot gains in box 20 and losses in box 58.

A futures or perpetual report should therefore preserve the legal product, exchange entity, realized close P&L, funding, fees, and year-end open-contract value. An open_long, open_short, or position snapshot is position information, not another realized gain. If contract status is not supportable, mark it for review instead of forcing it into spot FIFO.

Staking, mining, interest and crypto gifts

Rewards do not all share one rule. Skattestyrelsen has separate guidance for staking and mining, crypto interest, airdrops, hard forks, and gifts. The economic arrangement, ownership, work performed, and ability to dispose of the reward matter.

Crypto interest is valued when credited and available. Its later sale is a new disposal, and the receipt value enters the acquisition history. Mining or staking can create income before the token is sold. A business operator has accounting and expense questions that a private speculative report does not answer.

Do not infer tax from an importer label alone. "Reward," "earn," "funding," and "airdrop" describe data sources, not the contract. Keep unsupported events in a review schedule.

Documentation and report controls

Skattestyrelsen asks taxpayers to retain orders, purchase and sale evidence, payment records, correspondence, wallet-provider terms, public addresses, account balances, bank statements, deposits, withdrawals, and transaction files. A complete report should:

  1. import all centralized and decentralized accounts,
  2. pair self-transfers before building global FIFO,
  3. value every event consistently in DKK,
  4. calculate each disposal before separating gains and losses,
  5. keep financial contracts apart from spot speculation,
  6. show missing price or basis as not calculable, not a confirmed zero,
  7. reconcile detailed transactions to boxes 20, 58, 346, and 85 where applicable.

A tax software report is supporting evidence, not a binding Skattestyrelsen decision. Compare the report structure in the sample tax reports and the data controls in the DeFi audit-trail guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Denmark's crypto tax always 53%?

No. The general crypto page mentions 53% as an orientation, but the applicable 2026 brackets also include an additional 5% toptopskat at very high personal income. Use the current income-year schedule and your actual municipality and income.

Can all crypto losses offset gains?

No. Ordinary speculative gains and losses are generally reported separately and have different tax values. Only a narrow official sequence exception permits limited netting.

Is Danish FIFO wallet-specific?

No. For the same cryptoasset, Skattestyrelsen applies FIFO across the taxpayer's combined holdings, exchanges, and wallets.

Is swapping BTC for ETH taxable?

Yes, it is a disposal of BTC and a new acquisition of ETH. Calculate the BTC result in DKK.

Are all stablecoins taxed like spot Bitcoin?

No. Some stablecoins or arrangements can be financial contracts subject to capital-income and mark-to-market rules.

Where are private gains and losses reported?

Current official instructions use box 20 for total speculative gains and box 58 for total documented losses.

Can missing acquisition cost be entered as zero?

A missing import field does not establish zero cost: first reconstruct the acquisition from exchange records, payment receipts and wallet transfers. If acquisition time, method and paid cost for a deposit genuinely cannot be documented, Skattestyrelsen generally requires acquisition cost of DKK 0 at the deposit date when calculating the later disposal. A documented transfer between your own wallets retains its original acquisition history; airdrops and other awards require their separate rules. Resolve which situation applies before filing.
